Paweł Matyszewski (born 1984) is considered one of the most talented painters of the young generation in Poland. He is a graduate of the Painting Faculty at the Fine Arts Academy in Poznań and, currently, a PhD student there.
He is a winner of the Grand Prix of the 1st International Painting Competition Modessqe as well as the National Centre for Culture’s and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage’s scholar. He has been awarded a number of prizes in various artistic competitions, such as “Bielska Jesień” Painting Biennial, The Young Art Biennial “Fish Eye” and “Promotions”. In 2012, he was nominated to “Trójka’s Talents” – the Polish Radio 3’s prize.
For the last 5 years, he took part in over 20 group exhibitions, i.a. “The Ninth Circle Of Obsession” at Tartu Art House in Tartu and “Don’t Touch!” at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Toruń. His solo shows took place at multiple galleries in Poznań: Piekary, Starter, Nowa and Enter, as well as Arsenał Gallery in Białystok, Bardzo Biała Gallery in Warsaw and the Centre for Creative Activities in Ustka.
His technique, perfect and refined, stays far from the ideal of sleek surface. He does not avoid unusual materials, like hair, sand and soil. He burns and pierces canvases, which are often associated with human skin.
